What is osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is a form of arthritis.

Osteoarthritis develops usually slowly and it gets worse over time. When a joint develops osteoarthritis, part of the cartilage thins and the surface becomes rougher. For some people, the symptoms can be mild and may come and go. Other people can experience more continuous and severe problems which make it difficult to carry out everyday activities.

Almost any joint can be affected by osteoarthritis, but the condition most often causes problems in the knees, hips and small joints of the hands.

This illness usually includes symptoms like pain, stiffness and lack of flexibility

The cause of osteoarthritis is still not clear. But there may be some factors that may affect the cause:

  1. Age
  2. Gender
  3. Overweight
  4. Joint injury
  5. Joint abnormalities
  6. Genetic factors
  7. Other types of joint disease
  8. Diet

The most common relief for pain is manual traction therapy which is performed by a physiotherapist or chiropractor. The price for traction therapy varies from 30-50€ per one session: minimum once a month. This makes almost 600€ per one year.
